Renovations

A NEW OUTFIT FOR THE GRANDE DAME CALDERWOOD HALL!

Our much anticipated renovations of the Jardine Centre at Calderwood Hall Guest House will be under way during the months of January and February 2012. The fundamental changes to the Function Room and Chapel will include:

  • a new "look" and a significant increase to the size of the venue,
  • the addition of a separate "sanctuary / alter area" and organ room in the chapel

The Jardine Function Centre
The new look for the function centre is more in keeping with the Edwardian Manor House whilst retaining a contemporary feel. The new function room will be fully enclosed and as such, there will be two large five-metre stack back doors leading onto a narrow wrap around walkway alongside the koi pond. The addition of the walkway will reduce the size of the Koi Pond slightly. Another set of stack back doors will lead off the venue onto a large outdoor deck area. In this way, we will create a more substantial venue while retaining the beautiful view of the mountains and surrounding forests. The existing windows will be removed and replaced with authentic sash windows dressed in a heavy neutral damask fabric with ornate rails and tie backs.

The interior of the function room will feature white "tongue and groove" paneling to a height of 1m, with matching dado rails and skirting. The walls above the dado rail (to the ceiling) will be a very pale grey (so as not to detract from any colour scheme a bride may choose).

Large ornate gilded mirrors will be hung at various intervals around the room to recreate that feeling of timeless elegance. Four oversized, white chandeliers will provide illumination. An authentic Victorian fireplace will add to the overall atmosphere and create consistency between the function room decor and that of the décor of the Manor House.

With the perimeter walls being raised by 1m all round, the whole feel and ambience of the room will be one of "space" whilst still retaining the charm and sophistication of a bygone era.

The ceiling will be draped in white and will feature a "Fairy Light ceiling." The perimeter of the Jardine function room will have a matching valance edged with fairy lights. The wall behind the bridal table will be partially draped with "waterfall" fairy light detail behind the drapes! The room has been designed in such a way that the walls can be draped should the bride request additional draping.

The new Jardine Function Centre will be significantly larger than the current one (which measures 140 square metres), it will measure 250 square metres. This will allow 250 guests to be seated comfortably, whilst still allowing for a dance floor. For smaller weddings, the room will also feature an indoor "chill lounge" alongside the fireplace to make the room appear more intimate yet retaining that cosy ambience.

Our New Look Chapel

Brides will be able to make a more grandiose entrance as they come in to the chapel through the wider, double volume entrance doors.

Our new Sanctuary (Altar area) will increase the size of the chapel by approximately 30 square metres thereby allowing the full bridal party and Officiant to assemble in this area and so allowing more seating for the congregation in the body of the church.
A large feature window at the front of the chapel will look out onto a large, ornate Victorian -style water feature with the beautiful KwaZulu-Natal Midlands scenery as a backdrop.

A separate Organ Room, with its own entrance, has already been completed and has made a huge difference to the interior of the Chapel already.

All the renovations, including the subsequent landscaping of the surrounding gardens, will be completed by 01 March 2012... and The Grande Dame Calderwood Hall will then look even more splendid in her new outfit!
